Natural Resources - Maritimes

Physical and natural forces that have shaped the Maritime provinces and created a diverse landscape:

  • Melting glaciers and running rivers have shaped the land
  • Tectonic plates coming together have created mountains
  • Tectonic plates going away from each other have made rivers and lakes
  • The geologic uplift has made plateaus

Physical and natural forces that shapes our culture and identity:

  • All the different types of people in the Maritimes have different cultures
  • Since the people live on the coast fishing is a big part of their lifestyle
  • The people have to eat a lot of fish because there are many areas of water for fishing but there is no forest where they are able to hunt animals
  • There is a great deal of growing land on Prince Island to use for agriculture
  • Prince Island produces a lot of potatoes
  • Nova Scotia produces a lot of lobsters
  • Nova Scotia also has a great amount of agriculture (flat growing land), forestry (forests) and coal mining (mountains)
  • The eco-region is a temperate broad leaf and mixed forest that includes many habitats on the hills, mountains, and plateaus

Communities in the Maritime provinces have adapted to, and been affected by, geographical changes:

  • There is trade, fishery, exporting, and importing in the Atlantic Ocean
  • Icebergs can be seen in the Northern region of Newfoundland and Labrador
  • There is a cold climate up to the north
  • There are very strong winds near the coastlines which is good for surfing and sailing
  • There is a huge Naval base because of all the bodies of water
