In this chapter, you will examine developments in the fur trade and conflicts between European settlers and the Metis and Native Peoples as Canada expanded into the Northwest. This will mean:

  • evaluating the impact of the fur trade on the Native Peoples of the Northwest

  • analyzing the emergence and development of Metis culture

  • using and creating maps to identify changes in the fur trade and to understand the movement of the Native Peoples

  • comparing and critiquing primary sources from the period

  • assessing the causes and key events of the Red River Rebellion

  • conducting research on an important figure in the development of the Northwest
